Choreographer – (Trustee and NYB alumnus)
Born in Ipswich, Jonathan Payn trained with his mother, Janet Kinson, before joining the Royal Ballet School. He joined Birmingham Royal Ballet in 1993; Soloist, 2000; First Soloist, 2006. He performs a wide variety of character roles in the Company’s repertory. His choreography includes Into the Ferment (Birmingham Royal Ballet) and ballets for Elmhurst School for Dance and National Youth Ballet. Jonathan holds Fellowship teaching status in the Cecchetti Method, regularly teaches company class, and has guest taught in the USA, Japan, South Africa and Malta. He acted as Company Manager for Birmingham Royal Ballet’s 2007 and 2008 split tours and in 2012-13 participated in the DanceUK Dancers’ mentoring scheme for future leaders in dance. For the 2015 revival of Enigma Variations Jonathan shadowed the restaging process at the request of the Ashton Foundation and in April 2016 assisted in the staging of Enigma Variations for Sarasota Ballet. Jonathan frequently hosts pre-performance talks in Birmingham and on tour.
He became appointed to the board of trustees for The National Youth Ballet in September 2016.
