Our vision is that young people will create the ballet of the future.

What We Do

We provide unique and inspiring opportunities both onstage and backstage for young people aged 9-18 to create, perform and take part in ballet.  We educate, nurture, inspire and train exceptional young dancers and developing artists from around the UK.  Our aim is to identify and develop talent and allow them to experience the journey from studio to stage and emulate a professional dance company.  Our model comprises three key strands of activity:

First is our Residential Performance Company.  Each year we hold auditions attended by aspiring dancers from across the country to identify talent and give places to approximately 100 young people aged 9-18.  They come together with a team of professional dancers, choreographers, teachers, musicians, designers, eminent composers, costumiers and technicians.  It’s an immersive experience which nurtures talent, increases aspirations and offers an insight into life as a professional dancer.  This culminates in performances followed by a Gala performance at Sadler’s Wells, London.

We continue to deliver Beyond Ballet, our initiative that supports emerging artists in the early stages of their career.  Aimed at graduates and professionals aged 18-35 aspiring Choreographers, Rehearsal Directors, Costume Designers, Lighting Designers and Musicians have the chance to work in a company environment alongside established professionals.  Each participant receives mentoring, shadowing opportunities and a paid role as part of the artistic team with their work profiled within a professional performance context.

To support our commitment to diversity and inclusion, we deliver a Community Engagement programme offering many children their first experience of dance and creative movement.  We are developing and extending these initiatives as an integral and essential part of the work we do.

We want to go further to support dancers and other young emerging professionals to fulfil their potential and help make these changes.  We recognise the health and wellbeing benefits of dance for all participants and our focus is on nurturing the whole person and embedding healthy practices.

We believe that teamwork, discipline, exercise and artistry which we encourage through all our programmes provide life enhancing skills, experiences and memories.

At the core of the National Youth Ballet story are young people and emerging talents.  We strive to work with a diverse range of people, across the UK including those with and without prior experience of dance and ballet.
