Róisín Whelan

Róisín Whelan (she/her) is a Choreographer, Movement Director and Director based in Ireland, working internationally across Opera, Theatre, Television and Dance.

In 2026, Whelan will choreograph La Fanciulla del West for Opera Holland Park and premiere The Great Melt, a new dance-theatre work commissioned through Dublin City Council’s Creative Hubs Award.

 

As Artistic Director of Róisín Whelan Dance, she has created numerous original works supported by Arts Council Ireland, receiving multiple Dance Bursary, Project and Touring Awards. Her accolades include the PROPEL Award, Ballet Ireland’s Emerging Choreographer Award, and several residency and creation awards. Whelan holds a BPA and MA from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

 

Recent theatre credits include The Borrowers, Circle Mirror Transformation, and Movement Rehearsal Director for Fun Home at Dublin’s Gate Theatre. Opera credits include Associate Director and Associate Choreographer for Hänsel und Gretel at Houston Grand Opera, alongside work with the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne, Osterfestspiele Salzburg, and Greek National Opera.
