Black History Month
Throughout October NYB has been celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth. Each week we have spotlighted one ballet artist to celebrate the role black artists have played in ballet history worldwide. The artists we featured are;
- Julie Felix Britain’s first black ballerina, and co- author of her personal memoir, Brickbacks and Tutus.
- Arthur Mitchell American dancer, choreographer and founder of Dance Theater Harlem.
- Raven Wilkinson The first African-American dancer in a major classical ballet company, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.
- Berto Pasuka co-founder of Les Ballets Negres, the first black ballet company in Europe.
Take a look at our Instagram page to see our celebration of these artists who have made a unique contribution to ballet and overcome the challenges they have faced because of their race.
With thanks to Anna Kirakowska, NYB Young Creative Producer for her research into the artists featured.
